CEMENT-BONDED PARTICLE BOARD FROM COTTON STALKS
The present post-harvest field practice recommended in cotton is to cut or uproot then burn plant residues after the last priming. The purpose is to kill the insect pests and prevent their build-up. But now the cotton stalks can be used as raw materials in the manufacture of cement-bonded particleboard (CBP). This does not only solve insect pest build-up but also augment farmers’ income. This added advantage may as well entice farmers to plant cotton in wider areas. It also provides a low-cost construction material, helping solve the housing problem of the country.
USES
The board can be used as internal and external walls, ceilings, cabinets, doors, kitchen counters, and flooring for upper floors.
FEATURES
- Fire-resistant
- Termite-resistant
- Nailable
- Sawable
- Paintable
- Plasterable
- Structurable
- Thermal and acoustical insulator
- Board with surface suitable for multi-purpose treatments
ADVANTAGES
- Materials are locally available
- Prevents insect pest build-up
- Generates employment
- Environment-friendly
- Provides cheap and durable panels
Additional Income for Farmers
Farmers can earn more with the CBP from cotton stalks. From a one hectare cotton field, about four tons of dried cotton stalks can be collected. At PhP 0.75 per kilogram, this means an added income of PhP 3,000.00 per hectare.
Business Opportunities for Investors
Investment in a CBP plant utilizing cotton stalks can be recovered in less than two years of operation. The annual cost of production is PhP 11,070,161. Return on investment of the business is 29.13%. This means that an investor can realize a net income of PhP 5,179,840 yearly from the sale of 125,000 pieces of 12 mm x 61 cm x 244 cm CBP at PhP 130.00 a piece.
