PSB-Ct9 Cotton Variety

PSB-Ct9 is a G. barbadense variety introduced into the country from Galapagos Island, South America in 1988. It was approved and released for commercial production in 23 February 1999 by the National Seed Industry Council.

Lint Recovery and Fiber Properties

PSB-Ct9 has a strong competitive potential in the world market. Its long, strong, and silky fiber is used mainly for the production of luxury fabrics and sewing threads. The Philippine textile industry's demand for this type of cotton lint is 10 percent of its total lint requirement.

Resistance to Major Cotton Insect Pests and Diseases

PSB-Ct9 is highly resistant to bollworm and moderately resistant to leafhopper. It is also highly resistant to Sclerotium rolfsii and resistant to Rhizoctonia solani, two soil-borne pathogens that cause damping-off disease in cotton seedlings.

Adaptability

After several years of field tests, this commercial variety was found adapted to cotton production areas in Luzon. It can also tolerate drought and saline conditions like that in Candon, Ilocos Sur under the following cultural management practices:
