UPLC-2 Cotton Variety

UPL-C2, a cotton variety released by then Cotton Research and Development Institute (now Cotton Development Administration), after several years of field tests in different cotton growing locations. Its origin is Reba P279. UPL-C2 was approved as a commercial variety by then National Seed Board (now National Seed Industry Council) in 1982.

Agronomic and yield characteristics

UPL-C2 is a determinate type of plant with close node and internode interval. Its stem is hairy and purple with leaves that are intermediately-lobed. It bears round pointed bolls. This variety grows to height of 113 cm at maturity. Its potential yield is 2.10 metric tons per hectare.

Fiber quality

The fiber of UPL-C2 is long (29.8 mm) average in strength ( 19.44 gm/tex). and coarse (5.10 µ). Lint recovery is 38.90%.

Reactions to pests and diseases

Its hairy leaves make UPL-C2 intermediately resistant to leafhoppers. It is susceptible to bollworm, resistant to damping off diseases cause by Sclerotium rolfsii and Rhizoctonia solani, and intermediately resistant to boll rot caused by Diplodia gossypina.

Adaptability

UPL-C2 is adapted to areas similar to the cotton growing conditions in Luzon and Visayas.
